Promising Initial Findings in 2009 Study of Clinical Importance of Phalangeal BMD Testing
"The large community-based Rancho Bernardo Study is currently testing the clinical importance of measuring BMD of the phalanges", writes Denise Muhlen, MD, Ph.D, of the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at UCSD's School of Medicine, "by comparing BMD obtained with accuDEXA with BMD of the total hip obtained by DXA, as well as comparing the association of phalange BMD with osteoporotic fractures. Preliminary results show that phalange BMD was positively and significantly correlated with hip BMD (DXA) in both sexes, and BMD at the hip and at the phalange were equivalent in their association with clinical non-vertebral osteoporotic fractures independent of sex, age and body size."
A poster describing the findings of the study was displayed at the 15th Annual Meeting of the International Society for Clinical Densitometry, March 2009.
